Upper Limits on the X-ray Emission of “Uranium” Stars
A paper by Qian & Wasserburg suggests the optical absorption lines of uranium observed in the spectra of ultra-metal-poor stars (defined as [Fe/H] <-3) arise from contamination from a supernova in a binary star system. Assuming the binary survived the explosion, a collapsed compact object may be present and implying potential accretion processes with accompanying X-ray emission. Upper limits on...
متن کاملUpper Limits on the Pulsed VHE γ-ray Emission from Two Young Pulsars Investigated with the High Energy Stereoscopic System
The High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) is a system of four, imaging, atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes in Namibia, designed to detect very-high-energy γ rays above ∼ 100 GeV. During 2002–2003, H.E.S.S. collected data from two, young and energetic radio pulsars: the Crab and PSR B1706−44. We searched for pulsations at the lowest energies that H.E.S.S. is capable of detecting, aiming at a ...
متن کاملγ-ray measurements and neutron sensitivity in a fusion environment
A system based on a LaBr3(Ce) scintillator and digital data acquisition is discussed in view of γ-ray spectroscopy measurements on a fusion burning plasma. High energy resolution and high rate capability of the system are demonstrated in laboratory tests and in dedicated experiments at nuclear accelerators. Preliminary results on sensitivity of the detector to 14 MeV neutrons are presented.
متن کاملNew Limits on Radio Emission from X-ray Dim Isolated Neutron Stars
We have carried out a search for radio emission at 820 MHz from six X-ray dim isolated neutron stars with the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Radio Telescope. No transient or pulsed emission was found using fast folding, fast Fourier transform, and single-pulse searches. The corresponding flux limits are about 0.01 mJy for pulsed emission, depending on the integration time for the particular source a...
متن کاملUpper Limits on Periodic, Pulsed Radio Emission from the X-ray Point Source in Cassiopeia A
The Chandra X-ray Observatory recently discovered an X-ray point source near the center of Cassiopeia A, the youngest known Galactic supernova remnant. We have conducted a sensitive search for radio pulsations from this source with the Very Large Array, taking advantage of the high angular resolution of the array to resolve out the emission from the remnant itself. No convincing signatures of a...
